'Iron Butterfly' is a cultivar of Letterman's ironweed, Vernonia lettermannii, grown for its violet-purple flowers and its lower profile compared to other Vernonia species; this specific cultivar was bred for its rapid growth rate and its extended bloom period, which ranges from mid-summer until autumn. Plants grow two to three feet tall with an even spread, and are strongly anchored by a central taproot.

This cultivar's showy blooms are also very attractive to pollinators, and attract bees, butterflies, and occasionally hummingbirds throughout the season.
