Well regarded as one of the best examples of the classic evergreen, 'Hicksii' hybrid yew is a slow-growing, densely branching evergreen selection that eventually grows to 10-12' tall and 3-4' wide. Noted for their even, attractive, dark green needles and its showy, modified cone structures (also called yew berries), yews have long been used as specimen plants, hedges, and foundation plantings, as their slow-growing habit results in an incredibly long lifespan and unique shapes that are beneficial for birds and largely untouched by browsing animals and other pests.
The 'Hicksii' cultivar of hybrid yew produces a uniform, upright structure that works well to add vertical levels to a landscape, and for formal, columnar hedges and foundations, and its evergreen foliage adds stately appeal to any home from spring well through winter. Highly tolerant of pruning, and resistant to salt, Taxus x media 'Hicksii' requires only full to partial sun and medium moisture, though it does benefit from protection from harsh winter winds.
Note: All parts of yews are toxic to consume, and while these feature makes them highly resistant to deer and rabbit damage, care should be taken when choosing an appropriate planting location to prevent accidentally poisoning in children or pets.
