Pineapple sage, named for the tangy, citrusy smell of its foliage rather than the traditional sage scent, and are characterized by their light green leaves and open growth habit. Pineapple sage is also a popular ornamental herb pick due to its bright red flowers, which are attractive to a number of pollinators.
Pineapple sage is typically an ornamental pick for herb gardens and container plantings, but can also be used in teas and cocktails.
Mature plants reach a height of up to 5' tall, but in cooler climates and with most publicly available cultivars, it reaches much more manageable heights of around 2-3'.
Considered a perennial in its native climates of Central and South America, pineapple sage can be treated as a tender perennial in North America, and in more northern areas, it's usually treated as an annual.
