Eupatorium maculatum, syn. Eutrochium maculatum, commonly called spotted Joe Pye weed, is a large, upright native wildflower that is a favorite food source of a number of butterfly species. From mid to late summer into the fall, spotted Joe Pye weed produces large clusters of bright purple-pink flowers atop large central stems that can reach towering heights of up to 4-10' tall! Eutrochium maculatum thrives in moist to wet, sandy loam soils with some organic nutrient content.
Spotted joe-pye is ideal for planting in damp settings such as drainage areas, rain gardens, along streambanks, and on pond edges. Although individual plants can become very large, they are very ecologically beneficial, and can support not just mature butterflies, but caterpillars and other insects too!
