Epimedium x versicolor 'Sulphureum' is a showy hybrid cultivar of barrenwort growing to about 12" tall. Noted for its ornamental value, 'Sulphureum' is well-regarded for its red or purple-veined foliage and pale to sunny yellow flowers in early spring. 'Sulphureum' is one of the oldest cultivars of Epimedium that was purposefully hybridized, having been bred sometime prior to 1849! Flowers are produced atop erect flower stems in the early spring, and bring the plant to a total of about 15” tall.
Epimedium x versicolor 'Sulphureum' prefers light to moderate shade in average to fertile, medium moist, well-drained soil, but is valuable among shade plants as it will tolerate drought and generally drier conditions once established. 'Sulphureum' spreads easily by rhizomes to form small colonies up to 24-30" wide and is best used in shaded woodland or rock gardens, along walkways, or as an accent planting underneath larger trees or shrubs. Many barrenworts are semi-evergreen to evergreen in environments with mild winters like Maryland.
