Epimedium x versicolor 'Sulphureum' is a showy hybrid cultivar of barrenwort growing to about 12" tall with red or purple veined foliage and pale to sunny yellow flowers in early spring. 'Sulphureum' is one of the oldest cultivars of Epimedium that was purposefully hybridized, having been bred sometime prior to 1849! Flowers are produced atop erect flower stems in the early spring, and bring the plant to a total of about 15” tall.
Epimedium x versicolor 'Sulphureum' prefers light to moderate shade in average to fertile, medium moist, well-drained soil. It is drought tolerant once established and spreads easily by rhizomes to form small colonies up to 24-30" wide. 'Sulphureum' is best used in shady woodland gardens, rock gardens, along walkways, or accent planting underneath larger trees or shrubs. Many barrenworts are semi-evergreen to evergreen in environments with mild winters.
