Cornus kousa 'Milky Way' (Kousa Dogwood) Unity Grown
Cornus kousa 'Milky Way' is a showy kousa dogwood cultivar named for its profuse spring blooms: this tree produces enough star-like flowers to rival the number of stars in the Milky Way! Also called Chinese dogwood, kousa dogwoods are originally native to east Asia, with this specific variety coming from Chinese stock (var. chinesis); kousa dogwoods are now famous the world over for their attractive ornamental appearance, and better disease resistance over the native Cornus florida. Like other dogwoods, 'Milky Way' kousa has excellent fall color, with a profusion of red and purple hues through the autumn months, adding multi-season appeal.
Cornus kousa 'Milky Way' is considered a semi-dwarf variety, and typically grows to only about 15-20' tall and wide with an attractive, multi-layered appearance at maturity. 'Milky Way' prefers bright, indirect sun or partial shade, and average, well-drained soil, benefiting from a good mulching through hot summers and cold winters. 'Milky Way' kousa dogwood is attractive to a number of pollinators with their showy white-bracted blooms in spring, and attractive to a number of bird species in the summer and fall courtesy of their bright red berries. In addition to their ornamental and ecological appeal, as well as their better disease resistance, kousa dogwoods tend to have great deer resistance too!
