Cephalanthus occidentalis 'Sugar Shack® 2.0' (Buttonbush) Unity Grown

Cephalanthus occidentalis 'Sugar Shack 2.0' is the improved version of the common 'Sugar Shack' cultivar of buttonbush found throughout native nurseries. A large, rounded shrub common in wetter areas across the eastern United States, buttonbush can commonly get to fairly large heights -- enter the 'Sugar Shack 2.0'. Growing to a consistent, ultra-compact size of only 3-4' tall and wide, 'Sugar Shack 2.0' has all the appeal of a classic buttonbush, attracting all sorts of pollinators through the late spring and early summer with its round, fragrant white blooms, but with the added benefits of tidy footprint and low-maintenance growth habit. Through the later months of summer, flowers turn to striking red, round, seed-filled fruits, perfect for all sorts of native birds, including ducks and other waterfowl if planted near a body of water. 

A staple plant for any pollinator garden, 'Sugar Shack 2.0' is deer resistant and adaptable to both full and part sun, preferring sunny spots with consistent moisture, like large rain gardens or in areas alongside creeks, ponds, or rivers. Aside from its smaller size, Cephalanthus occidentalis 'Sugar Shack 2.0' is improved in terms of general vigor too, producing a denser floral show during the spring months, which contrasts beautifully against glossy dark green foliage. In the cooler months, the ornamental season is extended with gorgeous orangey-red and burgundy hues in the fall and persistent nuts to add interest for foraging winter birds.
