Carex appalachica (Appalachian Sedge) Unity Grown

Carex appalachica, also simply called Appalachian sedge, is a finely textured semi-evergreen grass-like perennial that is found in a variety of habitats including dry forests and shaded rocky slopes throughout much the northeast and mid-Atlantic. Growing to only 18" tall, Carex appalachica's finely textured foliage is unable to support itself, creating a graceful weeping or draping appearance as it grows in small clumps to only about 6" tall and 18" wide. Endemic to a variety of climates within the Appalachian chain and north, this sedge can be found in dry shade spots, especially underneath trees, and produces small pale green flowers in early spring.

Similar in appearance to a grass, but with better tolerance of shade conditions and dry soils, sedges can be differentiated from true grasses by their lack of rounded plant structures. Like many sedges, Carex appalachica is unpalatable to deer and rabbits, meaning it has good tolerance to damage from both animals. Its attractive foliage and arching behavior make it an excellent addition to shady spots like woodland gardens or as an underplanting for a larger shrub, as well as sunnier or drier areas like meadows or well-draining slopes. Though Carex appalachica does not provide much in the way of pollinator appeal, its foliage is a valuable food source and host for a number of butterfly and moth larvae.
