Fothergilla gardenii 'Suzanne,' is a dwarf cultivar of fothergilla, an ecologically valuable, deciduous shrub found through the American southeast. Noted for its attractive dark green toothed foliage and showy pincushion flowers, this fothergilla cultivar is one of the most consistent dwarf cultivars on the market, growing to a manageable size of only 2-3’ tall and wide. Fragrant, creamy-white flowers cover the plant’s dense form in spring before foliage opens; blooms are then followed by tidy green foliage in late spring and summer. In the fall, foliage turns to a striking medley of fiery yellows, reds, and oranges, adding a ton of multi-season appeal.
The 'Suzanne’ cultivar's flowers are highly attractive to pollinators, especially bees, which adds to the plant’s ecological and aesthetic value. And while most fothergilla cultivars are fairly hardy, requiring only partial sun, but tolerating full sun, deer damage, and damp soils, Fothergilla gardenii ‘Suzanne’ is additionally hardy for hot dry summers and darker full shade conditions. With these few added benefits, ‘Suzanne’ is an excellent fothergilla selection for almost any landscape.
