Symphyotrichum oblongifolium (syn. Aster oblongifolius) is a species of aster, commonly referred to as aromatic aster, that thrives in dry, sunny conditions and tolerates poor and clay-rich soils. Aromatic aster self-seeds and generates showy mounds of blooms up to three feet tall in shades of blue and purple. Symphyotrichum oblongifolium produces these blooms from September into November, providing a valuable food source for pollinators, birds, and wildlife through the start of the cooler months.
Aromatic aster is a great choice for groundcover in a variety of locations with its fragrant foliage, high pollinator and wildlife value, and late season color.
