Ficus carica 'Adriatic JH' is a unique Adriatic fig cultivar noted for its even, bright-green colored fruits with a rich, red-colored pulp. Originally propagated from an unknown variety found on a residential property by homeowner Joe Hood, the tree is regarded as high producing (with mature specimens producing variable foliage and upwards of 90 pounds of fruit a year) and consistently producing even in cooler weather. According to FigDatabase.com, fruits are noted for "a balanced sweetness with distinct berry notes and a pleasantly jam-like texture."

Ficus carica prefers nutrient-rich, well-drained soil kept relatively moist throughout the spring and summer. As with many deciduous trees, figs require less water in fall and winter, more in growing season, though there are limits; if 'Adriatic JH' receives consistent high levels of rain through its mid-to-late fruiting season at the end of summer and beginning of fall, fruits are prone to splitting and premature rot, and foliage can develop rust.

Note: While ripe fruits are delicious and completely safe for consumption, many of the tree's parts, including leaves and branches, contain a mildly toxic compound, so care should be taken to keep fig plants away from areas where they might be chewed on by pets. In addition, care should be taken when choosing a planting location  for Ficus carica as fruits can result in reseeding, and trees perform best with a bit of maintenance through the year, especially with a heavy mulch layer through the fall and winter.

Marylanders Plant Trees

From the Maryland Department of Natural Resources:

"We launched Marylanders Plant Trees in 2009 to encourage citizens and organizations to partner with the State to plant new trees. Today, citizens can still take advantage of our coupon program to receive $25 off the purchase of a native tree at 86 participating nurseries across the State. The State cost of $20 per coupon is funded through a settlement from a major power generator for Clean Air Act violations, in partnership with the Office of the Attorney General, and Maryland’s participating tree vendors are generously absorbing the remaining $5.

Trees must be planted in the state of Maryland to qualify for $25 off coupon.
Wholesale customers do not qualify.
