Aster 'Wood's Blue' (Aster) Unity Grown
Aster x 'Wood's Blue' is a hybrid dwarf cultivar of Aster noted for its compact growth behavior and its showy blue-purple blooms with lighter colored centers from late summer into fall. These showy, beautiful blooms attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators and, once they've finished blooming, leftover seed heads will also attract birds. Similar in appearance to other compact asters like 'Wood's Purple' and 'Wood's Pink,' the 'Wood's Blue' variety completes the trifecta with another entry for gorgeous, hardy, diseases resistant blooms. Asters are capable of widespread cross-pollination and hybridizing, which may be the result of this hybrid, but 'Wood's Blue' will make a great addition to any space, with or without other asters.
Blooming between mid summer and early fall, this hearty aster grows to only 9-18" tall and wide in small, bushy clumps, and thrives in full sun; with the cultivar's compact, mounding growth habit, it is an excellent choice for smaller spaces and even container growing where it works wonderfully as a perennial substitute for fall mums. To promote an even more compact appearance in a densely spherical shape, flower buds can be pinched back in early summer to promote denser growth. In addition to its small size and attractive blooms, 'Wood's Blue' aster is deer and rabbit tolerant and resistant to salt, drought, and wet soil conditions, making it a versatile plant for all areas of the home garden.
