Pineapple sage, named for the tangy, tropical smell of its foliage rather than the traditional sage scent, is characterized by its light green leaves and open growth habit. Pineapple sage is also a popular ornamental herb pick due to its bright red flowers, which are attractive to a number of pollinators. Typically considered an ornamental pick for herb gardens and containers, pineapple sage can also be used in teas and cocktails.

While wild mature plants reach a height of up to 5' tall, pineapple sage will typically only grow to more manageable heights of around 2-3' in cooler, temperate climates. Considered a perennial in its native climates of Central and South America, pineapple sage can be treated as a tender perennial in North America, and in more northern areas, it's usually treated as an annual.
