Originally native to eastern Europe and Asia, Geranium sanguineum 'Max Frei' is now one of the most popular geranium cultivars available in the US. Low-growing to only 4-12" tall, but capable of spreading to form mats up to 2' wide, 'Max Frei' produces vibrant, 5-petaled reddish purple flowers in late spring.
Highly valued for its ornamental and pollinator value, 'Max Frei' spreads by seed and runners, and performs best in medium moist soils with some nutrient content. Growing well in full sun and part shade, Geranium sanguineum 'Max Frei' is an excellent showy groundcover, with added multi season interest from its spring flowers, crisp green summer foliage, and vibrant bloody red color in fall.
