Ficus carica 'Battaglia Green' (Fig) Unity Grown

Ficus carica 'Battaglia Green' is a unique Adriatic fig cultivar noted for its mottled, bright-green colored fruits with a rich, strawberry jam-colored pulp. Originally propagated from a specimen in Virginia Beach by nursery owner Sandy Battaglia, the 'Battaglia Green' cultivar comes from an unknown tree brought as cuttings from Italy by a couple of homeowners in the area. Brought to market by nurserywoman Sally Mays, this cultivar has become harder to find since 2006 when Sally closed her nursery. According to users of FigDatabase.com, Ficus carica 'Battaglia Green' is similar to the 'Strawberry Verte' and 'White Madeira' varieties, producing attractive fruits with strawberry-colored centers, but has fruits with darker color and better flavor, and stems with increased vigor.

Ficus carica prefers nutrient-rich, well-drained soil kept relatively moist throughout the spring and summer. As with many deciduous trees, figs require less water in fall and winter, more in growing season, though there are limits; while some figs can suffer greatly from high moisture or humidity through the summer months, 'Battaglia Green' reportedly holds up fairly well to high levels of rain and humidity. 

Note: While ripe fruits are delicious and completely safe for consumption, many of the tree's parts, including leaves and branches, contain a mildly toxic compound, so care should be taken to keep fig plants away from areas where they might be chewed on by pets. In addition, care should be taken when choosing a planting location  for Ficus carica as fruits can result in reseeding, and trees perform best with a bit of maintenance through the year, especially with a heavy mulch layer through the fall and winter.
