Espoma Organic Bone Meal is an all-natural organic source of nitrogen, phosphorus, & calcium that helps develop sturdy root systems and promote plant growth. Containing an NPK ratio of 4-12-0, this bone meal blend contains 4% Nitrogen and 12% available Phosphorus by volume, as well as 12% Calcium. In the form of finely ground bone, bone meal breaks down slowly over time, providing a long-lasting reservoir of essential plant nutrients.

Nitrogen and phosphorus are essential for healthy plant growth, with both elements aiding in the process of photosynthesis and, although it is not considered a standard plant macronutrient, calcium can help to buffer soil pH and aids in healthy plant structure. In greater detail:

  • Nitrogen aids in rapid growth of the plant as a whole, results in better production of seeds and fruit, and improves the general health and quality of foliage and plant tissues.
  • Phosphorus promotes faster root growth and good shoot structure, helps the plant set buds and develop flowers, improves overall vitality and vigor, and increases the healthy mature size of the plant.
  • Calcium can prevent soils from becoming too acidic or alkaline, and can be used to reinforce structure in plant roots and stems by giving more strength to cell walls; strong cell walls can additionally help prevent disease.

High in both Phosphorus and Calcium, bone meal can be used for treating deficiencies of either element or for slowly raising soil pH over time. If your plants are Phosphorus deficient, they may exhibit darker foliage colors in early spring, presenting as red or purple when they should be bright green, and this may result in reduced yield of flower and fruit over time. If your plants are Calcium deficient, they may exhibit signs of stunted growth or leaf curling, and may result in weaker or more disease prone mature plants. While we recommend the use of organic compost blends as the most reliable method to provide extra nutrients with a decreased risk of over fertilizing, bone meal can be used very effectively in gardens and container plants.

Available in 4.5lb bags.
