Physocarpus opulifolius 'Summer Wine' is an improved ninebark cultivar that combines the wine-colored foliage from Physocarpus opulifolius 'Diabolo' and the branch and foliar texture of Physocarpus opulifolius 'Nana' into one wine-colored, compact, draping form.

Well regarded ornamentally and ecologically for its pollinator attracting pink and white flowers in the spring, this cultivar adds additional contrast to any green landscape. And in the winter, after the purple leaves have fallen, the intricate branching pattern and unique exfoliating bark that give s the plant its common name can really shine.

This cultivar grows to between five and eight feet tall, so it requires a bit more space than the dwarf cultivars, but makes for a great hedge or border plant. Although the foliage may differ from the straight species, 'Summer Wine' also maintains all the hardiness of the original, and has great tolerance to a wide variety of soil conditions and grows well in drier sites with full sun.

Marylanders Plant Trees

From the Maryland Department of Natural Resources:

"We launched Marylanders Plant Trees in 2009 to encourage citizens and organizations to partner with the State to plant new trees. Today, citizens can still take advantage of our coupon program to receive $25 off the purchase of a native tree at 86 participating nurseries across the State. The State cost of $20 per coupon is funded through a settlement from a major power generator for Clean Air Act violations, in partnership with the Office of the Attorney General, and Maryland’s participating tree vendors are generously absorbing the remaining $5.

Trees must be planted in the state of Maryland to qualify for $25 off coupon.
Wholesale customers do not qualify.
