NewGen® 'Independence' is one of the newest and best hybrid boxwood cultivars on the market today, right alongside the other NewGen boxwoods. Patented in 2018, NewGen® Independence is noted for its strong branch structure, moderate size and growth rate, and its improved resistance to two of the major pests of boxwoods: boxwood blight and boxwood leafminer. This cultivar will tolerate any level of light; but may bronze or become sparser in intensely sunny spots or in full shade respectively. While the entire NewGen® line of boxwoods has better resistance to common pests, sizes and growth rates can greatly differ between different cultivars; 'Independence' typically grows to an appropriate medium hedge or specimen height of 3-4.5' tall and wide over a period of several years.
In the spring, NewGen® Independence produces inconspicuous white-green flowers that are attractive to pollinators like bees and hoverflies, adding ecological value to its hedge, border, and foundation plant appeal. With the added benefits of disease and pest resistance, a hedge planted with NewGen® Freedom boxwoods should maintain its attractive appearance for many years to come with only minimal effort over time. With that said, some care should still be taken with choosing an appropriate location for this boxwood selection; even though it is much more resistant to some boxwood pests, NewGen® Independence can still become a host of the invasive boxtree moth.
