Aster x 'Wood's Purple' is a hybrid dwarf cultivar of Aster noted for its compact growth behavior and its brilliant purple and yellow flowers from late summer into fall, which attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators; once attractive purple flowers have finished blooming, leftover seed heads will also attract birds. Similar in appearance to other purple-flowering asters like New England aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae), 'Wood's Purple' also stands out from the pack in terms of better disease resistance. Asters are capable of widespread cross-pollination and hybridizing, which may be the result of this hybrid, but 'Wood's Purple' will make a great addition to any space, with or without other asters.
Blooming between mid summer and early fall, this hearty aster grows to 12-18" tall and wide in small clumps, and thrives in both full sun and partial shade; with the cultivar's compact, mounding growth habit, it is an excellent choice for smaller spaces and even container growing. To promote an even more compact appearance in an almost spherical bush shape, flower buds can be pinched back in early summer to promote denser growth. In addition to its small size and attractive blooms, 'Wood's Purple' aster is deer and rabbit tolerant and resistant to salt, drought, and wet soil conditions, making it a versatile plant for all areas of the home garden.
