Amsonia hubrichtii, commonly referred to as Hubricht's or threadleaf bluestar, is an attractive, clumping native wildflower typically found in open environments with full to part sun. Clumping to form low, shrub-like masses, bluestar produces profuse blue-gray star-shaped flowers in mid spring, which attract butterflies and pollinators. Growing to a mature height of two to three feet tall, though prone to flopping behavior, Amsonia hubrichtii is also noted for its vibrant golden-yellow fall foliage. While some cultivars, like 'Butterscotch,' attempt to improve upon their parent species' fall color, there is absolutely no improvement necessary for the attractive hues it adds to the fall landscape.

Hubricht's bluestar's spring flowers, followed by summer and fall hues provide 3-season interest to border plantings, rock gardens, or rain gardens as well as open meadows. Natural resistance to deer grazing and poor soil quality also makes Amsonia hubrichtii an excellent choice for meadow restoration.

This Amsonia hubrichtii selection was grown here at Unity Church Hill Nursery.
