Cephalanthus occidentalis 'Sugar Shack' has all the appeal of a classic buttonbush, but in a more manageable size for a smaller garden space. Cephalanthus occidentalis attracts all sorts of pollinators through the late spring and early summer with its round, fragrant white blooms. Through the later months of summer, flowers turn to eye-catching, round, red seed-filled fruits, perfect for all sorts of native birds, including ducks and other waterfowl if planted near a body of water.

Typically growing to 6-12' tall and wide, buttonbush is a welcome addition to any landscape, but only really those with plenty of space; 'Sugar Shack,' with a smaller footprint of only 4-6' tall and wide will work in any space! A staple plant for any pollinator garden, 'Sugar Shack' is also deer resistant and adaptable to both full and part sun.  Aside from a smaller size, Cephalanthus occidentalis 'Sugar Shack' also adds additional aesthetic appeal, with new foliage emerging glossy red and maturing to shiny green, 'Sugar Shack' then finishes with a burgundy red in the fall and provides winter interest too with persistent seedy fruits. An adaptable compact shrub that loves a medium-moist to saturated, boggy soils, 'Sugar Shack' buttonbush likes part shade to full sun, and is ideal for rain gardens, pollinator gardens and wetland restoration.
