A classic cultivar among red maple trees, Acer rubrum 'October Glory' is a stunning deciduous shade tree, perfect for canopy planting or naturalizing in larger forests. Known best for its vivid red fall color, 'October Glory' is fast-growing tree and will grow up to 40-50' tall and 30-40' wide. Small red flowers bloom in early spring, but give way to the winged samara-type seed pods that maples are known for, attracting birds and small mammals through the summer and fall.

Acer rubrum 'October Glory' prefers acidic, wet to moist soils, but is adaptable to drier, upland conditions, which makes it a great fit for most garden conditions. Acer rubrum is also a host plant for a number of caterpillar species, including the larvae of the adorable Rosy Maple Moth (Dryocampa rubicunda) and the majestic Cecropia Moth (Hyalophora cecropia) which, alongside seeds, attract a number of birds to the summer and fall gardens.

Marylanders Plant Trees

From the Maryland Department of Natural Resources:

"We launched Marylanders Plant Trees in 2009 to encourage citizens and organizations to partner with the State to plant new trees. Today, citizens can still take advantage of our coupon program to receive $25 off the purchase of a native tree at 86 participating nurseries across the State. The State cost of $20 per coupon is funded through a settlement from a major power generator for Clean Air Act violations, in partnership with the Office of the Attorney General, and Maryland’s participating tree vendors are generously absorbing the remaining $5.

Trees must be planted in the state of Maryland to qualify for $25 off coupon.
Wholesale customers do not qualify.
