Vaccinium corymbosum 'Legacy' (Highbush Blueberry)
Vaccinium corymbosum 'Legacy' is a cultivar of highbush blueberry, a bushy, upright shrub known and widely regarded for its tasty edible fruits, which are also prized by birds and wildlife. The 'Legacy' cultivar is noted for its late-fruiting growth habit, which means that 'Legacy' is a great addition even to established blueberry patches to help extend the blueberry harvest season well into August; originally introduced by the USDA in Beltsville, MD in 1993, this cultivar is a true Maryland 'Legacy.'
Vaccinium corymbosum 'Legacy' grows to 4-6' tall at maturity, producing white or pink-tinged, bell-shaped flowers which are attractive to pollinators and butterflies in April and which begin ripening into edible medium-to-large sized berries by July or August. Blueberry bushes like 'Legacy' make great additions to open yards as a source of free fruit, or as border and hedge plantings, where you can produce fruit en masse, and fall colors of yellow and orange add multi-season interest. If utilizing blueberry bushes for fruit production, care should be taken to cover plants while fruit develops to avoid bird damage.
Note: Most highbush blueberries are not self-fertile and require a pollinating partner of a different variety in order to produce good sets of fruit.
