'Brandywine' heirloom tomatoes date back to some of the original Stokes seed catalogs, an original offering from Johnson & Stokes in 1889 that they, in turn, received as an heirloom selection from a farmer in Ohio. Truly a classic among heirloom tomatoes, 'Brandywine' is named for the Brandywine Creek in southeastern Pennsylvania. Fruits are typically brick red with an occasional orange or green tint, and work excellently for salsas, cooking, and eating fresh too.
As with most tomato plants, 'Brandywine' can get very large, reaching a height of up to 6-8' tall and requiring staking to help hold up its heavy fruits, weighing 8-12 ounces apiece. Additionally, 'Brandywine' is an indeterminate tomato variety, and will continuously grow and produce fruit through the late spring and summer as long as it is provided with enough water, nutrients, and support.
