Solidago sphacelata 'Golden Fleece' is a showy, compact cultivar of autumn goldenrod, Solidago sphacelata, which grows to only around 15" tall and 2' wide, creating a bushy form that, come early autumn, is absolutely covered in a golden fleece of sunny yellow flowers. Developed by Mt. Cuba Center in 1989, this cultivar has a ton of ecological appeal, and a great variety of uses within the home landscape, working great for edging or low borders, container planting, naturalized groundcover/specimens, or in pollinator gardens.
As an autumn-blooming species, Solidago sphacelata is an excellent pick for supporting late-season pollinator populations, and works great under a huge variety of conditions. Growing best in full sun to part shade and medium-dry soils, 'Golden Fleece' is drought tolerant and deer resistant once established, and though it may be shorter and squatter than some goldenrod cultivars, it is a strong choice for companion planting in front of larger pollinator magnets for multi-season appeal.
