Sisyrinchium 'Suwannee' (Blue-eyed Grass)
Sisyrinchium nashii 'Suwannee' is a variety of blue-eyed grass, a very low-growing perennial wildflower typically growing to less than a foot tall. Well known for their ornamental value, blue-eyed grasses first produces soft, narrow, grass-like leaves, followed by striking pale blue flowers with a golden-yellow center through the late spring and early summer. The 'Suwannee' cultivar of Nash's blue-eyed grass is noted for its attractive, profuse blooms, and its tidier habit, with a tendency to spread via seed a bit less than the straight species.
Nash's blue-eyed grass is native to the southeastern US, where it grows as groundcover in open forests and meadow areas, meaning that it is no stranger to dealing with a variety of different environmental conditions, including poor, sandy soils, periods of drought, and fairly intense direct sun. But 'Suwannee' is also no stranger to humidity, as it was selected and reproduced from a small wild colony along the banks of the Suwannee River in Florida , and this hardy variety will do just as well in fairly damp shade too.
