Rudbeckia triloba 'Black Jack Gold' is a cultivar of brown-eyed Susan, a medium-sized perennial wildflower that is closely related to black-eyed Susans. Compared to the black-eyed Susan, brown-eyed Susans tend to have a more profuse bloom of smaller, airier flowers, resulting in an excellent display of color in the late summer and fall. Rudbeckia triloba 'Black Jack Gold' adds an even more striking impression to the fall garden with a denser profusion of larger golden flowers, perfect for adding a pop of color to naturalized meadows, woodland gardens, and pollinator gardens. Though gardeners may like black-eyed Susans more for their denser form, 'Black Jack Gold' brown-eyed Susan is a huge butterfly magnet in the summer and autumnal garden, and is sure to stun with its lush green foliage accented with bright flowers.

Moderately resistant to both deer and drought, and beneficial for pollinators and birds, 'Black Jack Gold' tolerates a wide range of conditions; since Rudbeckia triloba is happy growing in roadside ditches or along clear-cuts with scorching sun, 'Black Jack Gold' is hardy enough to tolerate nutrient-poor or clay-rich soils and even partial shade, though it grows best in medium-moist, well-drained loams in full sun. While Rudbeckia triloba 'Black Jack Gold' is an excellent pick for rehabilitation projects and pollinator gardens, it also works excellently as a border or foundation flower since its cut blooms can last quite a while in arrangements, and dead-heading can promote a second bloom as the fall stretches on; keeping this stunner close to the home is a sure fire way to see some butterflies and maintain a gorgeous vase of cut flowers from July through to September.
