Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldblitz' (Black-Eyed Susan)
Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldblitz' is a compact cultivar of black-eyed Susan, a medium-sized perennial wildflower well-known for its showy, long-blooming golden flowers. Compared to the similar variety 'Goldsturm,' Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldblitz' has smaller leaves and smaller flowers, but requires less special care and is generally a bit lower maintenance than 'Goldsturm.' Growing to a mature size of only about 24-28" tall with a spread of about 12" wide, 'Goldblitz' naturally forms tight, dense clumps as it grows, perfect for adding a pop of color to small spaces, containers, and pollinator gardens. Though it may be a bit less showy in terms of bloom size than its competition, the 'Goldblitz' variety is a guaranteed first-year bloomer, starting in early summer and carrying on through early fall, and will continue to perform for years to come.
Moderately resistant to deer, rabbits, and drought, and beneficial for pollinators and birds, 'Goldblitz' is an excellent addition to many of the same locations as other black-eyed Susans, including in low borders and hedges and in cheery container plantings. 'Goldblitz' is hardy enough to tolerate nutrient-poor or clay-rich soils, though it grows best in medium-moist, well-drained loams in full sun. Like other black-eyed Susans, Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldblitz' is sure to wow for its butterfly attracting potential, its long-lasting summer blooms, and its appeal in cut flower arrangements too!
