Gillenia trifoliata 'Pink Profusion' is a showy cultivar of Bowman's root, also called Indian physic, a clumping native wildflower found in medium-dry rocky soils across much of the mid-Atlantic, from Georgia all the way up to Ontario. Commonly found in mountainous areas, Bowman's root's typical habitat makes it an excellent pick in the home garden for planting on slopes or in poor rocky soils. The 'Pink Profusion' cultivar is a natural mutation found in Virginia in 1987 and introduced for purchase by Mt. Cuba Center in 1997. This cultivar is set apart from the straight species by its slightly smaller stature, only 2-3' tall, and it's bright, pink-tinted blooms.

Gillenia trifoliata 'Pink Profusion' is well-regarded for its airy, showy flowers which are produced on showy red stems above the bulk of the plant's foliage. Flowers bloom from mid spring to summer, and attract a wide variety of pollinators and butterflies. Though the floral display may end in summer, the show doesn't end there; in the autumn, the 'Pink Profusion' cultivar's foliage turns to striking shades of rusty orange-red. Gillenia trifoliata is hardy once established, performs great in a variety of light conditions, and tolerates a wide variety of soil types, including nutrient-poor and clay-rich soils.
