Physostegia virginiana 'Miss Manners' (Obedient Plant)
Physostegia virginiana 'Miss Manners' is an upright, clump-forming cultivar of obedient plant, also called false dragonhead; the 'Miss Manners' cultivar is upright but compact growth habit, strong sturdy stems, and long-blooming snow-white flowers. The name 'obedient plant' refers to the plant's unique flowers that can be prodded into different angles, and which will 'obediently' stay in place. Obedient plant is typically found in wetter locations, like lowland forests and floodplain meadows, across much of the eastern half of North America.
This cultivar of Physostegia virginiana grows to about 2-2.5' tall in clumps of about as wide in a variety of soil types and light levels. Blooming from early summer to early fall, 'Miss Manners' produces compact but strudy spikes of bright white flowers that bloom for months on end; though other varieties may be too vigorous over time, spreading to form large colonies, 'Miss Manners' will behave herself in small garden spaces, containers, and compact formal beds. Physostegia virginiana 'Miss Manners' is an excellent choice for pollinator and rain gardens, handles occasion inundation very well, and makes for great cut flower arrangements.
