Phlox stolonifera 'Sherwood Purple' is a cultivar of creeping phlox, a low-growing perennial groundcover that produces excellent bright purple flowers in the mid- to late Spring and reblooms throughout the summer. Typically growing only 6-8" tall, 'Sherwood Purple' can spread up to 1-2' wide, and makes for a great bed flower with tubular, star-shaped, fragrant blooms above a sea of compact, bright green rounded foliage that retains its color year round.
Attractive to a number of pollinators including native bees and butterflies, and performing best in full to partial shade, Phlox stolonifera 'Sherwood Purple' is the perfect plant to line beds or underplant larger shrubs in shaded pollinators gardens or to naturalize in woodland settings. With its slow spreading nature, this Maryland native requires only an average amount of moisture, grows well in sandy, slightly acidic soils, making it a versatile groundcover selection. Care should be taken with choosing a good planting location, however, as phloxes can be heavily browsed by deer and rabbits.
