Malus x 'Perfect Purple' is a hybrid ornamental crabapple cultivar noted for its upright growth habit, pink flowers, and striking purple foliage that turn to bright red in the fall. Growing to 20-25' tall and 15-20' wide, 'Perfect Purple' lands squarely in the ornamental category; although related to domesticated apples, crabapples are small, sour, and bitter compared to their cultivated relatives. However, when bright pink spring blooms begin to blossom on top of soft purple foliage, 'Perfect Purple' truly fits its name, and attracts a variety of pollinators and wildlife to boot.
Malus x 'Perfect Purple' is not at all fussy, and was bred for increased cold hardiness and environmental tolerance. When given full sun, and moist, well-drained soil, 'Perfect Purple' becomes the perfect specimen or border tree, and adds contrast to any majority green landscape. In addition, though crab apples are often a concern for preventing messy sidewalks, 'Perfect Purple' is regarded as an incredibly attractive cultivar of many songbird species, who will rapidly consume many of the crabapples produced.
