'Black Truffle' is a culltivar of Lobelia cardinalis (Cardinal Flower), a native perennial wildflower known for its moisture loving properties and striking red flowers; the 'Black Truffle' cultivar is noted for its equally striking foliage, which is green tinged with dark purple and almost black hues.

Cardinal flower is somewhat short-lived and clump-forming in nature, and from late spring into early autumn, Lobelia cardinalis produces spikes of large, striking, cardinal red flowers on singular stalks that typically grow to between two and three feet tall. In landscape plantings, cardinal flower is easily grown in rich organic, medium to wet soils, and performs best in full sun or part shade.

Since it is so moisture-loving in nature, Lobelia cardinalis has very high water needs, and though it can be grown in a variety of locations, its water needs in the garden are the same; as long as the ground is wet, cardinal flowers make a great addition to pollinator gardens and woodland plantings, and do well enough in water to help with wetland restoration and rain garden plantings.

These specific cardinal flowers were raised from seed and grown here at Unity Church Hill Nursery.
