Hypericum calycinum, also known as St. John's Wort, is a shade-tolerant, creeping, woody perennial. Only growing to 18-24" tall and about twice as wide, this St. John's Wort is commonly selected for use as groundcover shrub or in mass plantings. Hypericum calycinum is tolerant of a wide variety of soil conditions and types, and is well-regarded for its vibrant star-like yellow flowers, which bloom in mid to late summer.

Hypericum calycinum tolerate both full direct sun and part-sun conditions, and will grow best in dappled sunlight or locations with direct morning light followed by full shade in the afternoon Many St. John's Worts typically die back to the root in winter, but in warmer climates, Hypericum calycinum can be semi-evergreen; in these warmer spots, it is important to shear back the growth tips in the late winter or early spring in order to encourage new growth and flower set during the main growing season. In addition, it is important to choose a good planting location for St. John's Wort as, although it is not considered invasive in most of the country, its thick roots are capable of spreading and may become difficult to remove.
