Hibiscus moscheutos, commonly known as swamp rose mallow, is a large, attractive native wildflower, commonly found in wetland areas throughout wetlands and especially salt-marshes across the eastern half of the United States. . Once established, each swamp rose mallow plant produces multiple stems or canes, resulting in a shrub-like appearance when stems are covered in large, dark gray-green leaves. From July to September, swamp mallow produces large, attractive, tropical-looking flowers that reach sizes of up to 6"-10" across; blooms range from white with dark purple centers to coral pink.

Since Hibiscus moscheutos can reach mature heights of 3-7' tall with clumps growing to 2-4' wide, it's important to choose an appropriate planting location for your swamp rose mallow, Hibiscus moscheutos makes for a great long-lasting living fence in wetter areas, as well as in wetland border plantings and rain gardens. Swamp rose mallow prefers full sun and wetter areas; though native to swamps, rose mallow will also do very well in the home garden if kept consistently moist, and its flowers attract beetles, butterflies, a variety of pollinators, and occasionally even hummingbirds.
