Heliopsis helianthoides, also referred to as smooth oxeye or false sunflower, is an upright perennial wildflower in the Aster family, with its common name referencing its similar appearance to that of true sunflowers (Genus: Helianthus). Different from true sunflowers, Heliopsis helianthoides grows to a manageable height of 3-5' tall, and produces sunflower like blooms through the summer; flowers which maintain their rays and golden yellow appearance through the length of their bloom window, unlike sunflowers.

False sunflowers thrive in average, medium-dry and well-drained soil, and especially in full sun, though they tolerate drought, a wide range of soils, and some light shade. Wide tolerance of growing conditions and beautiful yellow blooms means that these flowers will work in a variety of garden conditions, and as an added bonus, flowers make for great additions to floral arrangements, and are a vital species for pollen specialists.
