Geranium sanguineum 'Album' (Bloody Cranesbill)
'Album' is a white-flowering variety of the blood cranesbill, known scientifically as Geranium sanguineum. Drawing its bloody name not from its attractive fall foliage but from its root color, bloody cranesbill is originally native to eastern Europe and Asia, but is now one of the most popular geranium species available in the US. Though other varieties like 'Max Frei' are prized for their compact habit and consistent beauty, the 'Album' cultivar is highly regarded for its striking, snow-white flowers in the late spring and summer.
Highly valued for its ornamental and pollinator value, Geranium sanguineum 'Album' spreads by seed and runners, and performs best in medium-moist soils with some nutrient content. Growing well in full sun and part shade, Geranium sanguineum 'Album' is an excellent showy groundcover, typically growing to 10-18" tall in spreading clumps up to 2' wide. With added multi season interest from its spring flowers, crisp green summer foliage, and vibrant bloody red color in fall, 'Album' is sure to impress in nearly any garden.
