Known as Hollow-stem Joe-pye weed and synonymous with Eupatorium fistulosum is a tall growing 6-9' tall herbaceous perennial that prefers rich, moist to wet soil and can tolerate gravel, sandy soils with moisture. Blooms from July to September with cloud like lavender blossoms with dark, purple stems.

An excellent alternative for the butterfly bush (Buddleia davidii). The large flowering domes provides a large surface for attracting a variety of pollinators and is host for the Peal Crescent butterfly caterpillar and seeds are eaten by songbirds.  Solidago, Asters, and Turtlehead make great companion plants for a rain garden, swale, pond edge planting border.
