An excellent and adorable addition to the garden, 'Sweetheart' is a hybrid barrenwort cultivar noted for its attractive four-part flowers in shades of rose pink and cream white, as well as its spring foliage, which emerges blush red before maturing to picotee, with emerald green heart-shaped leaves margined in purple-red. Growing to only 12-18" tall with flowers, Epimedium x rubrum 'Sweetheart' makes for an excellent shade groundcover, especially in locations with drier soil.

Prefers rich, medium to dry, well-drained soil with morning sun and afternoon shade. Leaves are deer resistant, and the entire plant is fairly tolerant of seasonal drought once established. Although foliage is semi-evergreen, it may deteriorate over the winter, and can be cut back in late fall for new, fresh foliage in the spring.
