Cephalanthus occidentalis 'Crimson Comet' is an especially showy and relatively compact cultivar of buttonbush, a medium-sized multi-stemmed shrub found in wet areas with poor drainage. The 'Crimson Comet' cultivar adds additional interest to a classic native beauty: new foliage emerges with an orange tint before deepening to green, but the real show comes in autumn when foliage turns warm shades of orange and red; persistent round fruits also add winter interest! Buttonbush attracts all sorts of pollinators through the late spring and early summer with its round, fragrant white blooms. Through the later months of summer, flowers turn to eye-catching, round, red seed-filled fruits, perfect for all sorts of native birds, including ducks and other waterfowl if planted near a body of water.

Typically growing to a slight smaller size of 6-8' tall and wide rather than the 12' size of the full-grown straight species, 'Crimson Comet' buttonbush is a welcome addition to any landscape, but especially those with wetter soil throughout the year. A staple plant for any pollinator garden, 'Crimson Comet' is also deer resistant and adaptable to both full and part sun.

Marylanders Plant Trees

From the Maryland Department of Natural Resources:

"We launched Marylanders Plant Trees in 2009 to encourage citizens and organizations to partner with the State to plant new trees. Today, citizens can still take advantage of our coupon program to receive $25 off the purchase of a native tree at 86 participating nurseries across the State. The State cost of $20 per coupon is funded through a settlement from a major power generator for Clean Air Act violations, in partnership with the Office of the Attorney General, and Maryland’s participating tree vendors are generously absorbing the remaining $5.

Trees must be planted in the state of Maryland to qualify for $25 off coupon.
Wholesale customers do not qualify.
