Bignonia capreolata 'Tangerine Beauty' (Crossvine)
Bignonia capreolata, also known as crossvine, is a semi-evergreen to evergreen vining plant (depending on intensity of the winter) noted for its attractive green leaves and showy, tropical-looking orange and yellow flowers. The 'Tangerine Beauty' cultivar is an especially vigorous variety that can grow to 20-30' tall up houses, trellises, and trees, and is named for the beauty of its tangerine-orange flowers in the early summer. While northern ranges or especially brutal winters may cause crossvine plants to die back to their roots, milder winters in Maryland typically lend good results, especially once plants are established. Beyond the attractive appearance of this vine's orange flowers, its blooms are additionally fragrant and highly attractive to a number of pollinators and hummingbirds.
A favorite for planting on trellises, up facades, or among trees, Bignonia capreolata 'Tangerine Beauty' can be used in almost any sunny or shadier location, so long as the soil is medium-moist and well-draining. As a vigorous grower, 'Tangerine Beauty' responds fairly well to pruning and shaping, and can be trained up fences, structures, or even dead trees for an excellent, and ecologically beneficial, specimen planting. To ensure the best results for your 'Tangerinbe Beauty' crossvine, provide plants with a healthy layer of mulch over the roots in the fall, and avoid planting in small containers to avoid unwanted dry-downs and potential freezing in the winter.
