Athyrium filix-femina 'Victoriae' is a unique cultivar of lady fern, commonly called Victoria fern, that is noted for its uniquely shaped fronds which criss-cross like a zipper up the length of the stem before producing a feathery crest at the tip. This cultivar was popularized during the Victorian era of fern experimentation, and works well as a shade planting for accents and historical value. 'Victoriae' is low-maintenance, thrives in part to full shade, and grows best in moist, well drained soil. Aside from its appearance, this cultivar's growth requirements are very similar to the classic Athyrium filix-femina and, as such, tolerates drier soil and more intense sunlight better than most ferns, though it requires consistent moisture if planted in sunnier spots.
The 'Victoriae' cultivar has a slightly more compact size than other varieties of Athyrium filix-femina, and maxes out around 24" tall and wide. This cultivar's showy, crested foliage makes it an incredibly unique addition to shady, moist spots anywhere in the landscape, and especially in rain gardens and woodland plantings. In terms of ecological benefit, a lack of flowers means that Athyrium filix-femina won't attract pollinators but, like many ferns, 'Victoriae' fills the niche of food source and host plant for several species of moth and butterfly.
