Rhododendron viscosum, commonly called swamp azalea and occasionally called 'clammy azalea,' is a small to medium-sized, showy, slow-growing shrub that reaches a relatively compact size of 3-5' tall and wide, though occasionally larger in the wild. Small, green leaves, fill in over the course of the spring and summer, and from late spring to mid-summer, Rhododendron viscosum produces large clusters of highly fragrant white flowers flowers with gracefully extending stamens; clammy azalea draws its less than charismatic name from the clammy or mildly sticky flower parts. Swamp azalea flowers are attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and other pollinators, and make for a truly impressive show through the spring and summer.
Like other rhododendrons, swamp azalea is sensitive to soil moisture, pH, and light, and this species grows best in conditions that mimic its typical environment of moist swamp land: medium-wet and well-drained, acidic, and organically rich soils in part shade. Rhododendron viscosum tolerates wet sites better than other azaleas and tolerates some full sun, but still doesn't tolerate wet feet, and intense afternoon sun may still cause leaf burn. With its specific growth requirements, swamp azalea may be a finicky plant for the home garden, but when its optimal growth conditions are met, Rhododendron viscosum can produce densely spreading thickets over time that produce stunning floral effects and a wonderful fragrance, which makes them a good choice for naturalization projects in shaded or acidic areas.
