Hydrangea quercifolia 'Snow Queen,' commonly known as 'Snow Queen' hydrangea, is a fantastic oakleaf hydrangea selection that's perfect for a variety of uses in the home garden. Maturing to a manageable medium-large size of 4-6' tall with a spread of up to 8' across, 'Snow Queen' is a perfect hydrangea for foundation plantings and hedges, with attractive, oak-like foliage and large, long-lasting, showy blooms. From June to July, this cultivar is noted for its strikingly large, upright flower panicles in a bright, snowy shade of white. Like other oakleaf hydrangeas, this cultivar's flowers are highly attractive to pollinators, stand up well against wind and rain, will eventually fade from snow white to pink and eventually to an attractive dried beige.
After the summer blooms because to dry back, green, large-lobed foliage turns from vibrant greens to stunning reds and purples. Then, after fall foliage has come and gone, coarse mature stems with attractive, cinnamon brown inner bark add eye-catching appeal to the winter landscape too. Hydrangea quercifolia 'Snow Queen' performs best in fertile soil in full to part-sun areas, and works great in a variety of landscapes; with year-round aesthetic appeal, 'Snow Queen' is an outstanding addition to any large garden space and works great as a specimen planting too!
Note: Oakleaf hydrangeas produce their summer blooms on old growth, meaning that to produce the best blooms for the following year, Hydrangea quercifolia can be pruned just after flowering, leaving behind enough branches to leaf and rebloom the following year.
