Cornus florida 'Jean's Appalachian Snow' is an ornamental cultivar of flowering dogwood, a native, flowering tree species considered to be among the most spectacular flowering trees in United States at springtime. As a member of the Appalachians series of cultivars, 'Jean's Appalachia Snow' is a disease resistant cultivar, showing excellent resistance to powdery mildew as well as good resistance to dogwood anthracnose, and this cultivar is also well regarded for its showy, early season flowers. This cultivar can be multi- or single-stemmed but typically grows to approximately 15-20' tall and wide. Although all flowering dogwoods set flowers before they begin to leaf out for the spring, 'Jean's Appalachian Snow' is noted for flowering especially early on in the spring.
Once flowers are established, they are followed by dense, attractive green foliage and bright red fruits in summer which are attractive to a number of bird species. In the fall months, persistent berries add further aesthetic appeal when autumn foliage turns to beautiful, bright shades of striking crimson red. 'Jean's Appalachian Snow' grows best in full sun to partial shade, but definitely benefits from protection against harsh full sun and wind; for increased protection, flowering dogwood can be planted as an understory or forest margin tree in well drained soils. Additionally, since flowering dogwood can be sensitive to temperature swings, you can provide a 2-4" layer of mulch to help keep the roots insulated through the winter and cool and moist through hot summers.
