Cornus x 'Celestial Shadow' is a hybrid dogwood cultivar that originates from a happy accident! Originally part of the Rutgers University dogwood breeding series, 'Celestial Shadow' dogwood is a direct descendant of the the 'Celestial' cultivar, hybridized between Cornus kousa and Cornus florida and possessing all of the disease resistance typically associated with hybrids of this type. 'Celestial Shadow' was developed from cuttings of a chance sport mutation of the original 'Celestial' hybrid, and produces breathtaking bright green and golden yellow variegated foliage in the spring and summer. Before foliage sets in spring, bright, white flowers make a great early season impression, which then contrast beautifully with fresh foliage. Then, through cooler months in the fall, the plant's attractive foliage takes on even better coloration with pinks and purple hues.
Cornus x 'Celestial Shadow' typically grows to about 18'-20' tall, and about as wide, and prefers bright, indirect sun or partial shade, and average, well-drained soil. To ensure your 'Celestial Shadow' has enough moisture during hotter, drier months -- and especially if it's in a brighter spot -- a good layer of mulch will ensure it stays insulated from drought and high temps. Though many dogwoods are attractive to birds due to their bright red fruits during the summer months, you may see less fruits on 'Celestial Shadow' specimens, as hybrids tend to be less fertile than straight species.
