Athyrium x 'Ghost' is a show, hybrid deciduous fern variety that typically grows to around 24-30" tall and wide. A cross between Athyrium niponicum var. pictum and Athyrium filix-femina, the 'Ghost' cultivar is the best of both worlds, with striking silver-tinted foliage from the 'Pictum' side in a larger, more ornamental size from the lady fern side. In the spring and summer, the fern's silvery green color is on full display, and soft, silvery-green foliage adds a splash of beautiful, formal color to any woodland or shade garden.
'Ghost' is low maintenance and shade-loving, requiring only partial to full shade and medium-moist fertile soil with good drainage; too much sun can result in leaf burn, so as long as medium-moist shade conditions are met, 'Ghost' fern will work as a stunning ornamental fern addition to any garden. Though not truly native to the U.S., Athyrium x 'Ghost' presents no threat of becoming invasive due to its slow spreading nature, and additionally makes for an excellent ornamental selection to break up the monotony of more common green ferns.
