Viburnum rhytidophyllum, also called leatherleaf viburnum, is an attractive, semi-evergreen to evergreen viburnum relative that grows as a large shrub or small tree to about 10-15' tall and wide. Typically multi-stemmed in behavior, leatherleaf viburnbum is named for its deeply wrinkled, leathery foliage, which has a rough texture, but holds onto its green and brown appearance through most winter conditions. Though originally native to China, leatherleaf viburnum does not present a risk of becoming invasive, and will attract huge numbers of pollinators and birds over the course of the year. Showy, cream-white flower clusters attract butterflies and beetles from the late spring into the early summer and, when planted near another leatherleaf viburnum, you'll ensure the set of beautiful, bright red berries in the early fall before fading to a darker, almost black color and lasting well through the winter, perfect for feeding birds during the colder months.
Viburnum rhytidophyllum grows best in full sun to partial shade, and prefers medium moist soils with good drainage, though it isn't too picky about soil type. As a low maintenance evergreen to semi-evergreen, leatherleaf viburnum makes for a great screening shrub and as an excellent, showy specimen plant. Although somewhat slower growing than other ornamental viburnums like 'Chindo,' Viburnum rhytidophyllum has a ton of aesthetic appeal, and is resistant to damage from deer thanks to its rough textured leaves, meaning consistent beauty throughout most of the year!
