Rhododendron periclymenoides (Pinxterbloom Azalea)

Rhododendron periclymenoides, commonly called pinxterbloom azalea, is a medium-sized, showy, slow-growing shrub that grows to a relatively compact size of 3-6' tall and slightly wider, though occasionally in the wild, mature specimens will reach 10' in height. Small, green leaves, fill in over the course of the spring and summer, and from early to late spring, Rhododendron periclymenoides produces showy, fragrant, bright pink flowers with gracefully extending stamens. Flowers are attractive to butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, and make for a truly impressive show through the spring.

Like other rhododendrons, pinxterbloom azalea is sensitive to soil moisture, pH, and light, and this species grows best in conditions that mimic its typical environment of upland fopen forests: medium-wet and well-drained, acidic, and organically rich soils in part shade. Rhododendron periclymenoides tolerates some full sun exposure, but especially hot and sunny summers may cause leaf burn. With its specific growth requirements, pinxterbloom azalea may be a finicky plant for the home garden, but when its optimal growth conditions are met, Rhododendron periclymenoides can produce dense thickets over time which produce a stunning floral effect in the spring as well as a wonderful scent, which makes them a good choice for naturalization projects in shaded or acidic areas.
