Physocarpus opulifolius (Ninebark) Unity Grown

Physocarpus opulifolius, otherwise known as ninebark for its ornamental, excising bark, is a deciduous, upright shrub native to much of the eastern United States. Growing to between 3 and 10' tall, ninebark is commonly found on riverbanks and in rock outcroppings, and is therefore tolerant of both intense heat and drought, but also seasonal flooding too. Physocarpus opulifolius is noted for its myriad ornamental cultivars, but the straight species is an excellent candidate for ecological rehabilitation plantings, due to its larger size and high ecological appeal. While plants produce showy white flowers in the late spring and early summer that attract bees and butterflies, plant foliage also plays host to a number of moth and butterfly larvae. And in the fall, foliage turns to attractive shades of yellow and orange, and shares space with bright red seed pods that attract a number of bird species.

Physocarpus opulifolius grows best in full sun, though it may benefit from some shade in especially harsh environments, and prefers to grow in medium-dry spots with well-draining soil. Thanks to its native ecological niches, however, ninebark can tolerate occasional flooding as well as drought, making it a hardy choice for a variety of landscaping locales. Its large size and dense branching makes it a perfect choice for large screens or borders, as well as an excellent pick for pollinator gardens and specimen plantings.
